Jumping spider slings (spiderlings) are relatively easy to care for, but require specific attention to feeding and enclosure setup. Feed them fruit flies every other day initially (instars I-3 through I-5), gradually introducing mini mealworms and fly spikes from instar I-6 onwards. Provide a small, well-ventilated enclosure with adequate moisture and a source of light.
Enclosure:
• Size:
For slings I-3 through I-5, a small 2x2 container is sufficient, transitioning to a 2x2x4 enclosure for I-6 and I-7.
• Material:
Use a clear container like a deli cup, small terrarium, or jar with ventilation and an escape-proof lid.
• Substrate:
A soil-like substrate that can hold some moisture is recommended, but not overly wet.
• Decor:
Provide hiding spots like small pieces of bark, leaf litter, or artificial plants.
• Lighting:
Jumping spiders need light, so a daylight LED lamp is recommended, especially in areas with less natural light.
• Humidity:
Maintain adequate humidity through regular misting, but avoid over-saturation.
Feeding:
• Instar I-3 to I-5: Primarily feed flightless fruit flies every other day, 2-5 flies per feeding.
• Instar I-6 onwards: Introduce mini mealworms and fly spikes (fly maggots).
• Frequency: Spiderlings need frequent feedings, while older spiders can be fed once or twice a week.
• Prey Size: Choose prey items that are slightly smaller than the spider's abdomen.
• Supervise Feeding: Always remove uneaten prey to prevent it from harming a molting spider.
•
Other Important Considerations:
• Molting:
During molting, jumping spiders will create a dense web and may stay hidden for up to 3 weeks. Leave them undisturbed during this time.
• Water:
Provide water via a fine mist or a water source like a cotton ball that is kept moist.
• Social Behavior:
Jumping spiders are solitary creatures and should be housed individually.
• Handling:
Handle with care, using a brush or straw to guide them, or gently coax them onto your hand.
